On the 19th March 2012 group members paid a visit to Shoreham Airfield for a very enjoyable conducted tour. The tour guide gave us a very interesting talk on the history of the airfield which has been in operation from the very early days of flying and now plays host to private planes from the four corners of the globe. In addition, the Sussex air ambulance helicopter, which also doubles as a police helicopter, is based.

The weather was particularly kind which meant it was a good day for photography and as a result, group members were able to take many pictures of the planes and surrounding buildings. The ages of the planes ranged from nearly new to more than sixty years old, and every one was airworthy. The terminal itself was a delightful art deco building which was sadly in need of what appeared to be little more than cosmetic restoration.

New members are always welcome and if necessary, an additional group can be formed if our numbers exceed a reasonable level.

A word from Ian our Group leader

Our group caters for all levels of photographic ability with the more experienced members providing support and advice to those who wish to develop their expertise in camera work and in digital processing.

2011 was a very satisfactory year, the group currently has a potential membership of 23, although due to various other commitments, our last two monthly meetings have averaged (a satisfactory) 14 members.

Visits were made to Firle Place Spring Fair, Alfriston, Bentley Wildfowl Trust, Nymans Gardens and Sheffield Park and we were blessed with excellent weather on each occasion, however, the highlight of our year must be the quality and quantity of the entries to our Photographic Competition, held in conjunction with the Christmas Quiz, on 1st December (more detail on this subject can be found in Julian Oakley’s article elsewhere).

My thanks are due to those of you who provided home venues for meetings prior to our current use of the Civic Centre and, in particular, to Peter Martin for providing excellent technical support for members where needed.

I look forward to meeting group members at 10.00 am every third Monday in the Month in the Martlets room of the Civic Centre during 2012 when, hopefully, we can arrange a selection of interesting outdoor venues to carry us through 2012.

The following meetings are scheduled for 2012

    16th April - Civic Centre.
    21st May - Outside Venue.
    18th June - Civic Centre.
    16th July - Outside Venue.
    20th August - Civic Centre.
    17th September - Outside Venue.
    15th October - Civic Centre.
    19th November - Outside Venue.

Group members have agreed that, on 17th December, we will celebrate Christmas by way of a lunch at a local restaurant in liwu of a meeting in the Civic Centre.

Due to the current size of the group, we are now meeting in the Civic Centre instead of members homes as we have done in the past and the cost of room hire is divided equally between all of the group members. Individual members will be responsible for costs incurred on visits to outside venues but as most visits will be to National Trust properties and gardens, members of the National Trust will gain entry free of charge.

Please contact the Group Leader regarding car sharing.
