Uckfield U3A

French Conversation

What is the level of the group?

It is intended for those members who have some prior knowledge of French, perhaps from school or travel in French-speaking countries. It is not suitable for complete beginners.

What do you do?

We explore and discuss a range of topics, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It is an opportunity to practise and extend conversational skills rather than a formal teaching session.

Where do you meet and when?

All meetings take place in Uckfield Civic Centre, from September to April. We meet on alternate Wednesday mornings from 09:30 to 10:45, followed by coffee.

How much does it cost

There is a small charge per term to cover the cost of hiring the room.

The 2011-2012 session of French Conversation meetings have been enjoyable and successful, with lively participation from all concerned.

The fortnightly meetings have retained the long-established feature of brief presentations by members on a pre-arranged topic and contributions to agreed discussion items. A more unpredictable element has been added with the introduction of a selection of recent (but deliberately unidentified) news photos from the French speaking world and other sources. These have frequently generated animated discussion, and occasionally total bewilderment, but, most importantly, ensured that a wide variety of topics is covered and an opportunity given, not only to practise but also extend one’s vocabulary.

A further dimension has been added with the availability of wi-fi, so that brief video clips can be used as extra support and further stimulation of conversation.

We look forward to seeing as many as possible of our current members at the next session starting in September 2011 but there are a few vacancies. A certain degree of fluency in French, acquired perhaps from school or travel in French speaking.

We meet in the Uckfield Civic Centre on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 9.30am to 10.45am, followed by coffee. We are not always assigned the same room, so please check the information board in the foyer. There is a small charge per term to cover the cost of the room.
