Coffee Mornings in Aid of the Sussex Air Ambulance Service

A series of six coffee mornings have been arranged at members houses to raise money for the Sussex Air Ambulance Service. These events are usually attended by twenty to thirty of our members and here are some photographs of just a few of them enjoying themselves.

Sussex University U3A Network (SUN) Coastal Walk

On Thursday the 9th June 2011, the Uckfield U3A “Walking for Pleasure” group leader organised a walk from Seaford over Seaford Head and on to the Cuckmere valley and back to Seaford skirting the picturesque golf course. The Uckfield Lions had kindly lent us their Mini coach and we set off from Uckfield at 9.30am. Before we had gone more than a few hundred yards, the heavens opened and it poured until we reached the outskirts of Seaford where it ceased and for the rest of the day we were bathed in sunshine. For a time the wind was blowing a gale but that too was only temporary.

Going Back to Seaford

At the end of our walk we retired to the White Hart pub feeling slightly exhausted but very happy and had a most enjoyable lunch before returning to Uckfield mid afternoon

Visit to Polesdon Lacey for the Tulip Festival on Wednesday 4th May 2011

At 9.30am on 4th May, 49 of our members set off from Uckfield bus station for Polesden Lacey in Surrey, stopping in Dorking to allow those who were interested, to visit a shop that specialises in quilting and quilting supplies located in the town.
The coach arrived at Polesden Lacey at 1.00pm allowing three hours to view the house, gardens and grounds. The unusually warm spring had caused the tulips to bloom about three weeks earlier than usual and although some of them were a little past their best, there was still an excellent show of these beautiful flowers. The irises were in full bloom and the roses in bud but it would be another couple of weeks before they were at their best. The walled gardens were beautifully laid out and some of our members resolved to visit Polesden Lacey a little later in the year.

The house itself was lovely with a wonderful display of paintings and exquisite furniture, a lot of which was antique French and not the original Edwardian furnishings in place when the National Trust became custodians. Everything Edwardian at that time was completely out of fashion and removed from the house which one or two of us felt left it rather lacking in warmth and authenticity. Nonetheless, we all thoroughly enjoyed our gloriously sunny day out and arrived back in Uckfield at
5.30pm tired but contented.
